Inoculate Against Viruses
If you use Microsoft Outlook or Outlook Express as your e-mail program, you can be a victim of the Bubbleboy.vbs worm even if you don't open the attachment just by viewing the message in the Preview window! Microsoft has details on how this works and what to do about it. Regardless of your e-mail program, if you use Windows you should download and install the patch.
The recent ILOVEYOU virus and its variants have caused one of the worst computer virus outbreaks in history. They caused considerable lost time and data.

Software
Download Free Microsoft Office Tools
Viewers and Converters for Microsoft Office Files.
Download Sun's Free StarOffice Suite
Read the PC World article. StarOffice includes a word processor, a spreadsheet application, presentation software, a database, a Web browser, an e-mail client, a scheduler, and tools to help you sync Palm-based personal digital assistants. It can import and export Microsoft Office files. PC World found you need a powerful Pentium PC with at least 32 MBytes of memory and up to 170 Mbytes of available hard disk space. They found it ran unacceptably slowly on a 200 MHz Pentium, much better on a 733 MHz Pentium.
Go to Sun's download page. Depending on your system, the download is 79 to 109 Mbytes. The download can be done as one large file or a series of smaller files. If you prefer to avoid the lengthy (up to 8 hours at 28.8) download time, you can purchase a CD with printed documentation
Download Free Web Browsers and E-Mail Programs
Internet Explorer and Outlook Express.
Netscape Navigator and Communicator.
Download Free Utilities
Adobe Acrobat Reader - read and print PDF (portable document format) files.
AVG Anti-Virus - virus detection and removal
Bugnosis - web bug detection software
eTrust - content inspection and mail watcher software.
FreeZip - a small, simple program to compress and decompress files.
IDcide - stop web sites from tracking you as you surf.

PGP (Pretty Good Privacy) - encryption software.

Viewers and Converters - for Microsoft Office Files.

ZoneAlarm - personal firewall software. Recently updated.
Read what ZoneAlarm users have said (97% are positive). Please note that some users have reported incompatibilities with AOL Version 6 and high-speed internet connections.
If you later decide to uninstall ZoneAlarm, to avoid serious problems, be sure to follow the lengthy un-installation instructions
