In 1910, wildfires exploded across the Northern Rockies. The fires were so devastating that they sparked a campaign against what the Forest Service agency’s first chief, Gifford Pinchot, called "the Dragon of Devastation." In this issue of HCN, historian Stephen J. Pyne recalls the "Big Blowup," and how it took 78 lives and made a hero of ranger Ed Pulaski.
